The Gordon River, Tasmania The Gordon River displays many moods as it descends 570 metres over its 172 klm. course, running east to west under Mt. Hobhouse. A major perennial river in the central highlands of Tasmania, its lower reaches contain cold climate rain forest and many species of rare trees. The water, whilst being fresh and drinkable, is the colour of weak tea, caused by the absorption of tannin from the button grass growing in the catchment area.
