Robert Mortimer

My obsession with painting started in my youth, and my career as the owner of a successful signwriting business was forged due to this need to work with a brush and paint. Signwriting taught me brush control, and allowed for a certain degree of creativity while providing a steady income, but my instinct to work freestyle on artist’s canvas became increasingly keen.

Retirement in 2015, finally presented me with the opportunity to explore my passion. My desire to learn new techniques and hone my skill took me to classes, and ultimately led me to joining Caloundra Arts Centre Ass. The sharing of ideas, knowledge and inspiration with fellow artists has allowed me to grow in all aspects with my painting, and as a consequence, I was a finalist in the” Local Artist, Local Content” at the Caloundra Regional Gallery art show, and have had sales success at recent art shows, and on the internet. I have also completed many private commissioned pieces, and public murals

I have always found inspiration in the ever changing beauty and moods of my surroundings. Painting is a natural expression of my creative vision, and I strive to capture the elusive essence of the human form in my portraiture work, and the drama and tranquillity of the local landscape of the Sunshine Coast, where I live.

I am a traditional painter, rooted in the aesthetic values of the French Impressionists. Inspired by light quality, colour harmony and abstract shapes, my paintings are my interpretation of this traditional value through my direct observation and memory.

I want to produce works that explore the rich play of light and texture across the Sunshine Coast landscape, building my canvases in layers of colours that allow for a variety of subtle moods, evoking emotions that connect with the observer. I seek to maintain and develop authenticity in my work, conceived as a simple sketch ( expressing the energy, rather than the physical reality of the subject),  and developing and building my palette  around that sketch to realise  the final image.
